It has been my pleasure to fill the role of Baronial Marshal for many years. As much as I would like to continue in the role, there are limits to holding the position, and my time has to end in 2023.
The Baronial Marshal is an officer position, and so a successful applicant would be required to have an active SCA membership while they hold the position. The Branch Marshal is not required to be a senior marshal in any discipline but is heavily encouraged to work towards it during their term.
I will also be happy to continue on as a deputy for whomever takes over this officer position, or at least during a transition period, as I enjoyed the role and want my successor to do the best they can.
Please apply for this opportunity by emailing seneschal@montengarde.org, excellencies@montengarde.org, and branchmarshal@montengarde.org. This post must be up for 90 days then the new officer will be chosen from the applicants.
Baronial Marshal Duties:
The Baronial Marshal is responsible for supporting any marshal related activities and ensuring rules and conventions of the SCA and Kingdom are followed. This most commonly manifests as running fight practices, but also requires enthusiasm and occasional paperwork.
Practices:
- Open the hall for practices each week and collect money from attendance and fight passes
- Manage the Iron Key loaner gear
- Communicate with the hall administration as needed
- Give the money collected from practices and fight passes to the Exchequer (1-2/yr), then get a cheque from the Exchequer to give the hall for our rentals (1/yr)
Admin:
- Manage the practice related paperwork, such as the regular sign-in sheets and incident reports
- Report monthly to the Montengarde council about what is happening related to marshal activities
- Send a quarterly report to the Kingdom Earl Marshal
- Make any marshal related posts on the Montengarde website (and unofficial pages like FB groups)
- Manage the Branch Marshal email
The Branch Marshal does not have to do any of this alone, and can be supported by deputies. While these deputy positions can be unoccupied, it is helpful to split the work and support each other. The most important task for a deputy is showing up and supporting when possible, but the actual tasks are left to discussion between the Baronial Marshal and their deputies.
It is common, but not required, for a deputy to learn about the duties of the Baronial Marshal so they can step into the position down the line but a deputy can also be as simple as an occasional backup. I will not fill these positions during the application process as the new officer should select their own deputies. They can be added at any time and do not have to be arranged when applying.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.
YIS,
Vladimir of Montengarde aka Matthew Cambear
Montengarde Branch Marshal
