Montengarde Arts and Sciences Championship
Unto the populace of Montengarde shall these words be shared! At this upcoming Twelfth Night, January 18, 2025, there is to be a grand Tournament to choose the next Montengarde Emerald Rose, Champion of Arts and Sciences!
January brings us into the middle of the darkest nights and coldest days. However, there is rejoicing to be had when we do the things that we love. These activities help bring us through these challenging times and into the bright light of the coming Spring.
Thus! The theme for the upcoming Tournament is What Inspires You?* Show us, through your chosen Art or Science, what brings you light and inspires you through these bleak winter months.
(* Please note that while we would love to see entries that follow the theme, it is not a requirement for entry. Just a fun extra!)
The document containing information on the A&S tournament for this year is now available in this folder on the website. If you have any issues accessing the document please let me know.
Rubric for judging physical and non-physical entries may be found on the Avacal Kingdom site (Avacal.org) under Officers, Ministry of Arts and Sciences, Documents.

Bardic Competition
Lords, Ladies, Good Gentles all! Are you ready for a street fight? The middle ages were alive with street performers – Jongleurs, Magiciens, Acrobats, Dancer, Musicians – all vying for the attention, and the coin, of the thronging masses! But while the performers were seemingly unlimited the coin was not and so each would strive to outdo the others with their wit, charisma and skill!
And so shall it be on the eve of the 12th Night as we call on the Bards of Montengarde and neighbouring realms to compete in a brawl of the Buskers! Bring your best SCA appropriate performance of any style, filch, or period! Amaze and amuse the thronging crowds with your prowess and be judged by the coin that fills your caps, cases, or satchels!
Coins will be available for sale to the populace and spare hats will be provided for any bards without a head cover of their own. The winner will be whomever collects the most coin and all shall be donated towards the war wagon at the end of the night. An additional prize will be bestowed upon the bard who best embodies the spirit of the street performance!
So come! Busk a Move! Don’t miss out, or you will Rue the Day! The challenge will be Thorough and Fare! Don’t be shy – Avenue Experience! Take the Boulevard by the horns and take it Alley the way! Cul de sac your opponents and see them Lane before you! Proclaim that “I did it High Way!” Be Loud and Road! Express yourself and enter now by writing to Alexander Blackadder at champion-bard@montengarde.org
A Bardic Circle will follow immediately after the bardic competition – all welcome – all styles!
Yours in Service,
Alexander Blackadder

Montengarde Fencing Championship
Twelfth Night is a time for roguery, fellowship and fun—but it is also when Montengarde’s Champion of Rapier, the Dragonblade, shall be decided!
Bring your favourite weapon style. The tournament format will be a Round Robin (everybody fights everybody else once). Double kills are to be re-fought once, and then it shall be counted as a double loss.
Non-vying fencers are welcome to test mettle! There will be a prize for highest number of wins overall and a prize for Gallantry.
All fencers MUST pass inspection before the tournament, and must present proof of authorization in their weapon styles of choice on the day of the tournament.
Fencers vying for the championship must have an SCA membership and participate and reside within the borders of Montengarde or the surrounding shires (Sandeshend and Windwyrm). Fencers vying for the championship must have an inspiration.
Fencers wishing to vie for the championship must declare their intent to vie to Their Excellencies Montengarde, Baron Refr and Baroness Ádís, by January 11, 2025.
The Champion of Rapier must hold a tournament to select their successor at the next Twelfth Night. It is customary for the Champion to inspire participation in the fencing community, attend Their Excellencies Montengarde behind the thrones during court, and lead Montengarde’s army into battle on the rapier field. If you have more questions about the duties and responsibilities of the Champion of Rapier, please contact Their Excellencies or myself.
Hope to see you there!
Rhiannon
