Trying to recreate a historical feel when camping in the mundane world can be a fun and exciting challenge. For some, they will take an item that would be used in mundane camping and turn it into something that looks really cool and still works, and then there are those who see a painting or a carving and proceed to recreate the entire set up for their encampment.
For this Dragonslayer, there will be a fun and interactive A&S competition incorporating both styles of creative camping ingenuity, with two categories, a small camp walk through, and some cool prizes.
First Category: Making the Mundane Medieval
– This category is where you have taken a modern day piece of equipment and changed it to make your camp look more period. This could be anything from a cooler made to look like a treasure chest to a water jug made to look like a wine barrel.
– Documentation requirements are as follows:
o What is it?
o Why it was made?
o How was it made?
o What inspired this project?
o What would you do differently or advise someone else who wants to pursue this project
– The documentation should be able to fit on an index card, but may be up to a single letter sized page
Second Category: Bringing the Past into the Present
– Recreating a piece of camping equipment based on historical inspiration, trying to create a camping experience that is closer to medieval camp life. This could be anything from a chair, to cooking utensils, or even medieval bathing solutions.
– Documentation requirements are as follows:
o What was the extant/painting/carving etc, that inspired this?
o Who would have use it and when?
o What was the process?
o What would you do differently next time and why?
– Documentation may not fit on a single index card, a single letter sized page may be used. (This is a camping event, let’s keep the documentation simple)
Judging!
As in any A&S competition, there will be judges who determine the winner. The judging will begin with a tour of the camp, with each piece being seen in succession. The judging will include, but is not limited to the following factors:
– Does it reflect a piece that looks period?
– How functional is it?
– Was the documentation provided?
– Does it add to the overall period-ness of the campsite?
If you plan on entering, please let the Montengarde A&S Champion know no later than July 9th, 2018
